Honeymoon Tent
In 1879, Francis and Rebecca Greene honeymooned in Egypt in this magnificent tent... It is "13 feet high and 16 feet in diameter, of white cotton canvas, decorated inside with hand-stitched cotton appliqué of geometric and floral designs in Mamluk Revival style..." There is a fragment of a thirteenth century love poem running the inside perimeter (in the red area in white Arabic lettering). One line reads, "The enchanting one is a sword in my heart…." according to Harvard University's Semitic Museum, where the tent now resides. It must have been quite romantic. Read the story of the tent here.
