Ingmar Bergman

Ingmar Bergman, one of the most talented filmmakers of all time, died in 2007. He'd directed 62 films and more than 170 plays, had been married five times, and had had nine children during his life. In his will, he insisted that his belongings be auctioned to 'prevent them from being caught up in some 'kind of emotional hullabaloo.'" The auction will be September 28th in Stockholm. This is another sale that fascinates me. It seems this space pictured above is the setting in which most of these pieces sat, a beautiful Swedish home. Could they not have kept all this together as a museum? How amazing would that have been? As a museum of Bergman's life and also of Swedish design. Hmmmm. In any case, I'm honestly happy to be able to see, even if only virtually, everything below. I only wish I could be there in person to really take these in...
The Safari chair by Kaare Klint,
four Goran Wassberg sculptures,
a model of the Royal Dramatic Theatre (amazing!), also shown open below, with Bergman in his favorite seat (!)...

this Randi Fisher painting,
Pernilla 69 by Bruno Mathsson for Dux,
a copper kettle,

"Släden" by Carl Malmsten,
"Sheep" by Nils Gunnar Zander,
a birch on metal stand reading table,
a 1920s Marland AB film projector,
a 19th century pine folk art table,
this totally cool, dog-eared flip-book (!), and
this Randi Fisher painting. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I do! You can see all 337 objects here.
Top photo (also for sale) is by Lennart Nilsson of Ingmar Bergman with Kabi Laretei, his fourth wife.

Birthday

It's my birthday! I feel happy today, even though there have been lots of these. Eddie, of course, is very excited because there will be presents and cake. I bought myself this beautiful photograph from Kitty Rogers to celebrate. I love it. Please go look at her etsy shop and her lovely blog, Penny and Spree.

ps. the best thing about my b-day is that is also the birthday of my very best friend, my beautiful twin. Happy Birthday, Dor!!

I Miss This Lake

I was going through our vacation photos to put together a book for us...
and, well, we just had the best time at Moraine Lake (not far from Lake Louise, and so special). So I thought I'd put just a few more photos here. I miss this lake!

Sotheby's Auction: From a [Fabulous] Parisian Flat, Avenue Montaigne

I hope your Monday has started well!I received one of my periodic e-mails from Sotheby's the other day. Up for auction are the contents of this Parisian flat! Fascinating. I think it's a magnificent pied-a-terre...
It's filled with so many very personal collections. I wonder why the owner is parting with so much? This is how Sotheby's describes the auction:
"An eclectic collection, resulting from the variety of experiences and influences that the owner has encountered throughout her life. Travelling the world, visiting museums, galleries, monuments, archaeological sites and gardens, her curiosity has always guided her to explore new art forms and collecting fields.
"She decided to set up one of her homes in Paris and over the years has built a collection in the classical setting of her apartment on the Avenue Montaigne. This proved an ideal space to house her expanding photograph collection, as well as furniture, Asian art, silver and decorative arts."
I had a lot of fun browsing the offerings here.
All photos are from Sotheby's e-catalogue.

Georgetown Loop

We rode the train last week! And we tried to tour the 1870s silver mine. But, after about 50 steps into the very dark, very small, damp, cold tunnel, neither the four-year-old nor his claustrophobic mother needed to venture any further. Loved the train, though!

Emma Kunz

Have you seen the work of Emma Kunz? What a genius.
She described her art as follows: "Shape and form expressed as measurement, rhythm, symbol and transformation of figure and principle."
