Ben Shahn
Happy Monday, and I hope your weekend was so peaceful. I came across a work by Ben Shahn the other day and was instantly reminded that even his lines are masterpieces... All artwork by Ben Shahn. The first, of a dove, is from a 2005 Rago auction. The second, Figure with Ice Cream Cone, is the one that made me smile and go on my search. I saw it on Pinterest, looked for a source, and came to a dead end. So, I continued the search on my own, and I was able to find that the original digital image was created by the Treadway/Toomey Galleries for a March 2005 auction (not by the woman who copyrighted it on flickr (???)). The third, Female Figure, is also from Treadway/Toomey in 2005. And the last three are from Rago's auction of Ben Shahn's estate in November of 2010. They are: the cover image from Book on Ben Shahn written by his wife Bernarda Shahn, Dove, and The Sea Itself from the Rainer Maria Rilke Folio. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Happy first week of Spring to you!

I love the ice-cream one- so simple and lovely.
I love Ben Shahn's work! Years ago, I saw his massive retrospective at the Jewish Museum in NYC. Whether he was executing commercial illustrations or personal work, his work seems so powerful and evocative. I love his hand lettering as well.
VisuaLingual- That must have been fantastic! Thank you so much for your comment!
oh, i just love ben shahn. thanks for reminding me! i need a little inspiration today (i'm catching up on my blog-reading, heh).
Ben Shahn had a residence in Roosevelt Borough, New Jersey. A larger color rendition of the ice cream piece is in the principals office of the school in that town. His world famous mural adorns the wall of the school's lobby. It's amazing.
Thank you, unknown. I would love to see that school. I hope the children understand what they have!
